The images on this site are for downloading and printing at home.
They have been generated in response to an brief to transform a creative piece of work from one medium to another.
I have transformed a downloaded mp3 of the Ferranti Mark One performing three tunes. Made in 1951 by the BBC at the University of Manchester, it is the oldest recording of a computer playing music in existence.
The mp3 began life as a computer program for the Ferranti, which was recorded live (with a small audience of technicians) to an acetate disk, copied again to another acetate, digitised, compressed and uploaded here.
The jpeg began life as a letterpressed poster which underwent two stages of medium format photography and was finally digitised, compressed and uploaded here.
Every audible element in the original recording has a direct visual correlation in the final piece. It is a transformation of both the content and the process of the original.
The final stage in the transformation is complete when you download and print these jpegs.
